R&B Is not dead!
Thanks to groups like Boyz II Men, R&B is still alive and well today. With a career spanning over 20 years, with countless # 1 records and platinum albums, the group has released their latest album ‘Twenty’! Check out the interview below as the Boyz give insight on the evolution of R&b today as well as their up and coming album below:
On the current state of R&B [Wanya]:
The state of R&B is in a transitional stage right now. There are artists in the industry right now that are trying to maintain the integrity of it such as the Ne-Yo’s, the Beyonce’s, Usher, Chris Brown but R&B has taken a backseat for a minute to hip-hop. Now it’s starting to poke it’s little head up there and starting to make it’s way into the hearts and minds of the consumer that want to fall in love all over again and hopefully with this album Twenty, we can help people to do that.
On getting back true R&B [Shawn]:
It might not reach the pinnacle that it did back in the day because just like Wanye said times are different but I don’t think it will ever go anywhere. It’s just one of those things that still exudes a certain soul and feeling that will always have it’s place in people’s hearts. If it becomes mainstream that’s something else. Like Adele, a lot of people don’t consider her R&B because she’s white but she’s singing R&B music and she’s singing soul music. You see what type of year she had. So, R&B music still has it’s place in the minds of people. It’s just all the matter of artists actually believing in themselves and with that, they’ll make it more of what it is.
On what’s next for Boyz II Men [Nathan]:
True R&B? That’s who we are. We’ll try different things but we never go to far from the core of what we’re supposed to be. We have 60 million fans who fell in love with what we’re about and you can’t alienate them. You want to do the best to stay on track with what they’re used to but you also want to expand and try different things as an artist musically. So, we won’t go too far from what we know but we’ll definitely try to some new things.
