Cal-a-Vie in Vista, Calif.: The San Diego-area wellness resort kicks serious butt, according to Lonely Planet’s “best luxury boot camp” list. Morning hikes, a choice of 125 classes (including CrossFit and TRX) are all part of the fitness regime. Stays include all meals plus spa treatments such as massages, reflexology, facials, hydrotherapy and a hair and scalp treatment). The Ashram in Calabasas: Travel + Leisure dubs the holistic-minded resort the “original austerity boot camp” and cites Oprah Winfrey, Ashley Judd and Cindy Crawford as onetime visitors. The combination of vegetarian meals, hikes and training are designed to achieve an altered state, the website says: “After seven days at the Ashram, your body is toned, your mind is purged, and your spirit it soaring.” The cost of a week’s bliss: $4,800. The Ranch at Live Oak in Malibu: The resort, which also made Lonely Planet’s “best boot camps” list, offers a no-option daily fitness routine of hiking, core and ab work, weight training and yoga. Whether you want to toughen your endurance or lose weight, the Ranch promises to do both in its off-the-grid natural setting. A week’s stay costs $6,200. Red Mountain Resort in Ivins, Utah: Every package at this resort includes healthy meals, yoga, fitness classes as well as guided hikes and bicycle rides. Three-night Weekend Warrior packages that add boot camp and TRX classes as well as personal training sessions start at $295 a night, a bit of a bargain compared with other boot camp prices. The Golden Door in Escondido, Calif.: Shape magazine gives this 377-acre resort high marks for its fitness options: Pilates, dance, tennis, archery, hiking and more. The resort started in 1958 and describes itself as a “Zen-inspired oasis”; indeed, there are stone walkways and Japanese-style waterfalls at the site.
Weekly rates start at $8,250 and include fitness options, meals and spa treatments.
